Alpine was a growing but at the time still predominantly rural town in Texas. In this mural Moya del Pino depicted students to pay homage to the college of Sul Ross, along with a cowboy tending to the famous Texas longhorn cattle, and the distinctive hills overlooking the town of Alpine. This required some research as he was not able to travel to the location in advance, as he generally preferred to do.
