Homage to Granados

Homage to Granados

Year:

1918

Current Location:

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid

This homage to Spanish composer Enrique Granados, who had died on the passenger ferry Sussex which was torpedoed by a German U-boat while crossing the English Channel, is intended to look like a mosaic. It shows three muses on a pedestal inscribed with “Laus Musicae,” with mourners at their feet, surrounded by Grecian-styled figures playing musical instruments. The inscription says “A GRANADOS VICTIMA DEL TORPEDAMIENTO DEL XVXES POR VN SVBMARINO ALEMAN.”
